SAFe / LeSS — scaling Agile.

When one team becomes a hundred, you need scaffolding.

↳ tl;dr

Single-team Scrum doesn't naturally scale to 50+ engineers across multiple products. Two dominant frameworks address this: SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) — heavyweight, enterprise-friendly — and LeSS (Large-Scale Scrum) — minimalist, "just Scrum, with more teams." Pick based on org culture, not on which has more certifications.

SAFe

Four configurations: Essential (team + program), Large Solution, Portfolio, Full SAFe. Adds layers above the team: Agile Release Trains (groups of teams shipping together), Program Increment planning (10–12 week sync), and explicit Portfolio governance with funding decisions.

LeSS

Two configurations: LeSS (2–8 teams) and LeSS Huge (8+). Stays minimalist: single Product Owner, single backlog across all teams. No new roles introduced — Scrum scales by coordination, not by adding hierarchy.

How to pick

PickIf your org...
SAFeHas heavy compliance / regulatory layers, established hierarchy, prefers structured cadences
LeSSHas strong product-thinking culture, willing to push decisions to teams, allergic to layers
NeitherHas fewer than ~3 Scrum teams. You don't need a scaling framework yet — just better team-of-teams comms.

the SAFe debate

SAFe is divisive in the agile community — critics call it "waterfall in agile clothing." Both critics and adopters have a point. SAFe works for orgs whose culture actually supports the layers; it fails when imposed without the culture shift.
